*Amateur Edition*
Its happening! You are finally going to join that friend or your partner by tagging along on a round of golf. But how do you prepare for this potentially 4 hour session (or more) in the great outdoors? The heat of the summer can be brutal but as long as you are mentally and physically prepared, it shouldn’t stop you from having a great game and a nice leisurely “workout”. Since we are in the throes of summer, I thought it best to answer the question— what are things you must have to stay comfortable during a round of golf in the summer? Stick with me. Here are a few ideas.
Golf Shoes
Find comfortable golf shoes and pair them with sweat-wicking or weather appropriate socks. Make sure that you’ve broken them in a bit as the heat can sometimes cause swelling in your feet and ankles. The last thing we need is for your feet to be uncomfortable! I love a spike-less golf shoe like these Puma Palermo’s with a little leather and navy blue detail. It’s classy and admittedly, I wear them off the course too because they’re light weight, comfortable, and they go with almost anything! Also, shoes with spikes just feel weird to walk on.
A Well-Fitting Golf Glove
Wearing a glove will help prevent hand irritation. You’ ll want to find a snug but well-fitted glove. Find one where you have full range of motion in your fingers. There’s nothing worse than swinging a club without a glove on. After a few holes, it begins to hurt! I purchased my first golf glove from Palm Golf and love the quality. Right now, they are selling the Women’s Wanderer Glove. You can select a glove for your left or right hand and you can also choose a size for a more customized fit. This glove worked out beautifully for a petite person with small hands like myself.
Golf Balls
You definitely want to bring your own balls for the round. As a beginner, be aware that you might lose a lot of them to the hazards so maybe bring at least 3-4 packs of balls. Each pack typically comes with 3 balls so that’s 9-12 balls. I highly recommend Callaway’s Super Soft Ball in any highlighter color. For one, I actually like how it feels when the club strikes this ball. More importantly, the color is bold so it makes it so much easier to spot your ball.
Golf Tees
You’ll only need a handful of these since you only use them to tee off. Start with a small bag from whatever brand you like. Personally, I like wooden tees like the Penfold Hearts Premium Wood Tees. They’re so cute and add a little confidence boost to my golf game at the beginning of each hole.
Golf Towel
A golf towel comes in handy in so many ways. I’ve used it for wiping of my clubs or any dirt spots on my shoes. It definitely leans more of “nice to have” so if you’re on a tight budget or maybe you only plan to play once in a while and don’t want to spend too much, you can skip this one. I do, however, want to recommend this waffle textured Sierra Madre Golf towel because its cute as heck and also, please support small businesses.
A Really Solid Water Bottle
My day job just gifted me a personalized Stanley cup with an ultra convenient flip straw. I couldn’t be more pleased about how convenient this product is. I love that the handle is over top of the cup so you don’t have to worry about the handle getting in the way of the cupholder. More importantly, it holds a great amount of water and keeps it cold!
Travel Fan
This one is a game changer especially if you’re in a place with tons of bugs and no moving air. Unfortunately, it happens. As a new mama, I bought a travel fan for my little one but it’s something I’ll also hook onto a golf cart.
Golf Bag & Clubs
This one is a no brainer. Of course you need a golf bag and clubs if you want to play golf! If you plan on buying a new set, make sure you get fitted first. If you’re on a budget, you can call and see if you can rent clubs ahead of time. This is especially nice if you aren’t planning to play too often. Check out this adorable Fore All x Ghost Golf Bag with the cutest details.
Sunscreen / Chapstick
Make sure you protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays especially if you’re going to be out during the hottest parts of the day. Having a chapstick readily available is like an insurance policy— amazing to have case you need it. I love the feel of this 15 SPF Badger lip balm. Plus its mostly organic and made of mineral sunscreen so its much safer for you.
Bug Spray
The bugs in the south are something else and while the bug spray I am about to reference may not completely repel all bugs, I sincerely think it will help if you live in a place where mosquitos and ticks are a problem. Check out Murphy’s Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Repellant Spray as it has natural ingredients that aren’t harmful and says that it’s safe for all ages. It does have essential oils in it so please do your research before using it on a baby but this product would so helpful while you’re outdoors.
There we have it friends! If you have made it this far, thanks so much for sticking with me. These are the 10 “must-have” items that I believe would set you up for a fun round of golf in the summer heat! Now, go out there and have a great round!
